Brith Sholom Beth Israel collection, 1856-2006 (bulk 1920-1970).

The BSBI collection consists of ten series: constitutions, by-laws, and certificates of incorporation; histories; administrative files (including minutes, board of trustees records, financial materials, property materials, and topical files); membership records (including dues, pledges, donations, ledgers, cashbooks, etc.); publications; correspondence; social and religious materials (including those related to organizations, ceremonies, shabbatons, flyers/mailers, programs, and deceased files); miscellaneous materials (including individual histories, etc.); audio-visual materials (including photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and video tapes); and material related to the Charleston Hebrew Institute/Addlestone Hebrew Academy (including administrative records and yearbooks). The bulk of the collection covers the years 1920 to 1970; the largest series contain administrative files, records of social and religious activities, and photographs. While the collection includes materials from Brith Sholom and Beth Israel as separate organizations, most date from after the merger.

Brith Sholom Beth Israel was formed in Charleston, South Carolina, from the merger of two Orthodox Jewish congregations -- Brith Sholom (est. 1854) and Beth Israel (est. 1911). Originally spelled Berith Shalome (Covenant of Peace), Brith Sholom was the first Ashkenazic congregation in South Carolina and one of the first in the South.
